How to use the UV-C germicidal lamps correctly?

¿Cómo utilizar las lámparas germicidas ultravioleta correctamente?

UV-C lamps have been used for almost a century for the sterilization of medical equipment, hospitals and even in water treatment plants. Their proven effectiveness in eliminating up to 99.9% of germs, bacteria and viruses makes them perfect for this task.
However, like any disinfection tool, it must be used with some minimum-security measures. Although there is no conclusive data, the authorities advise to follow a series of measures to avoid eyes or tissue damages.

  • Firstly, we must ensure that the equipment has all the necessary microbiological test certificates.
  • Secondly, in order to guarantee the maximum disinfection, we must ensure that the germicidal lamp is placed in a central location in the room. Any surface staying out of the UV-C light will not be sterilized, so we will have to choose the lamp or lamps that better adapt to our space.
  • Thirdly, we must leave the room. During the sterilization process it is necessary that people and pets stay out of the room. The chosen germicidal ultraviolet lamp must have a timer, or even better, a remote control.
  • Fourthly, once we have left the room, we will turn on the UV-C lamp by the remote control and will programme the disinfection time. It is important that, during the process, no one has access to the room.
  • Finally, once the disinfection work is completed, the germicidal lamp will be turned off by itself and we will be able to enter the room out of danger, being 99.9% sterilized.

As you can see, sterilizing air and surfaces is very simple and only minimal safety measures are required.
